Spring Concerts

The YPAC was filled with the sounds of music last night, wonderfully created by the 5th and 6th Grade Bands, the 6th Grade Jazz Choir, and the 5th and 6th Grade Chorus.

The 5th grade band played Mr. C.'s composition Let it Begin to perfection; both bands performed sophisticated pieces well above their grade levels with the polish and finesse of older students.

The choir and chorus transformed the stage into a rain forest with their sparkling rendition of O Sifuni Mungu. The audience loved every note of the Sound of Music medley, which showcased the students' perfectly blended voices.

Special thanks to Mr. Dustin for everything he does to support music in our district.

To Mrs. Grover and Mr. C., our students continue to shine under your expert direction, guidance, and care. Thank you for an amazing evening of music!

The HMS Symphonic Band, HMS Jazz Choir, and 7th and 8th Grade Chorus showcased all that they've accomplished this year in an exuberant concert that featured moving farewells to our 8th graders.

Mr. C.'s piece, A Call for Peace, was a perfect fit for the Symphonic Band. They played this beautiful music with passion and finesse. The audience and our 8th graders were amazed and touched by the film that highlighted their work as 4th grade band students!

The choirs' emotional performances included an incredible Queen medley, complete with costumes, and dance moves, along with a stirring performance of Hallelujah, the 8th graders farewell song.

Mr. Brann and our students thanked and honored Mrs. Grover and Mr. C. for all they do.

Thank you to Mr. Dustin, Nick Prato, Colin Prato, and Ethan Hunt for their support last night.
Mrs. Grover, and Mr. C., the evening underscored the hard work and commitment necessary to achieve outstanding results-thank you!

HMS Career Fair

Ms. Carli Page-Redmann-Teacher
HMS students had the wonderful opportunity to attend four different career exploration sessions today during the annual HMS Career Fair.

Our students were enthusiastic about all they learned during these presentations. They had a chance to interact with professionals across a myriad of fields, who shared their expertise and advice about their vocations.

Special thanks to Nini Emmons, Chair of the HMS Career Fair Committee, and her team, which included Laura Mike, Ira Warshaw, Rich Smith, and Bob Morse. Thanks also to Mike Arsenault and Brad Ciechomski for their support with all things AV, and Kathy Gardner and Liz Reinsborough for their help and attention to announcements, schedules, and anything else that needed to be done!

To all of the presenters, we're grateful for your time and dedication to our students. We appreciate all you did to contribute to this special learning experience.

KaBaam returns to HMS

The HMS library hosted the third annual KaBaam on April 30, in honor of poetry month.

Charlotte Agell explains:
Visiting high school students performed poetry, including Poetry Out Loud veterans, Manny Dettmann and Ella Werner, to an appreciative audience, some of whom performed as well. The poems and poets elicited plenty of emotions. A KaBaam is a local invention, a sort of milder, gentler Poetry Slam. Many thanks to the PTO for the snacks, and to our Tracy Weinrich, our photographer! Please access the Kabaam slide show here

Who Was Newton?

We were pleased to have an opportunity to bring Honeywell and NASA’s award-winning science education program, FMA Live!, to HMS on Monday of this week.

FMA Live! was a hip-hop science concert that taught Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. This innovative and dynamic program was developed through a partnership with NASA and Honeywell in an effort to engage middle-school students in the wonders of science and demonstrate the relevance of the natural sciences to their daily lives.

The show featured a diverse cast of performers, music, video and bigger-than-life demonstrations to take students on an exciting journey through Newton’s Universal Law of Gravity, Three Laws of Motion and STEM careers.

FMA Live! featured interactive science demonstrations that

Yarmouth Fire/Rescue visit with our 7th Grade Students

Yarmouth Fire/Rescue visited the 7th grade Life Science classes this week for the second year.

Deputy Chief Richard Kinderlan and Kira Lacasse modeled the process of taking patients' vital signs for the students. The students had the opportunity to take their own vital signs as they learned about the connection between blood pressure, pulse, and breath rate, and the study of the circulatory and respiratory systems.

The students were immersed in this hands on learning experience, and appreciated the invaluable service that these professionals provide to our community.

Student Leadership Team visits Barbara Bush Children's Hospital

The HMS Student Leadership Team, lead by Nini Emmons, visited the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on Thursday, 4.30. Our students spent time doing crafts with the children, which they left for them as gifts; they were also able to tour the hospital. The leadership team appreciated this valuable opportunity to learn about all the hospital does to support the children who need them. They presented the hospital with a check for $500. Our thanks to Nini and these students for their work.

Garden Buddies

On Friday, May 1tst, our 5th grade and 8th grade students helped out at the YES garden as part of the HMS buddy program. Students worked hard at weeding, removing rocks, and spreading compost in order to get the garden ready for planting. Thanks to our students and their teachers for tending to our garden!

From Renee Rhoads to our students:

YOU ARE AMAZING! The garden looks fabulous and it was great to see such a beautiful team effort!

All the weeds were used to line the run of the chicken coop, so the hens are delighted!

Thanks again for coming down and working some magic! There will be an open garden time this summer and I hope I see kids return to enjoy the space. As soon as we hire our high school helper, we'll pick a day/time and I'll send you the info to pass on to students.

Happy spring, Renee

Ms. Agell's students create "Altered Books"

Charlotte Agell shared this fascinating project with HMS students and staff:

The purpose of the altered book unit was to investigate what a book could suggest beyond the literal. How might it transform itself?

Seventh Grade students explored various themes. You’ll find their works of art on display the last week of April (in our library) and below, in the slide show below.

If you are in the library this week, pop by to see our altered book display, featuring everything from a garden book with a water feature, to a dictatorionary, with, well, power-mad historical figures.

If you are unable to visit, please click here for a slide show and explanation.

Warmly,
Charlotte and Students
